The Coney Island community sustained enormous damage from Hurricane Sandy, but after months of diligent work, the businesses of America’s original amusement district will open this weekend for business.

On Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 PM, the day before the official opening, Nathan’s Famous will kick off its national hot dog-eating circuit with an official qualifying contest on the boardwalk (Boardwalk & West 12th Street) of Coney Island. This first-ever boardwalk event will launch a nationwide tour that stops in a dozen cities before concluding back in Coney Island with the annual July 4th world championship in front of Nathan’s original restaurant.

Sunday, March 24 is the official opening of Coney Island and to celebrate the re-opening of Coney Island after Superstorm Sandy, Deno’s Wonder Wheel has declared that all rides on the Wonder Wheel will be free to everyone this day. The Cyclone Rollercoaster will open with the annual egg cream christening, followed by free rides to the first 100 guests in line. Luna Park will also be open for all ages at noon to enjoy rides, games and fun throughout the day.

In 2013, Coney Island is poised for an exhilarating summer season, with an ever-expanding index of eateries and attractions that are sure to delight visitors of all ages. Steeplechase Plaza, which features the historic B&B Carousell, Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar and Grill, Place To BEach Bar and It’Sugar, a novelty candy store and souvenir shop, will all open their doors to the millions of Coney Island visitors this summer.
