Mondial Automotive Inc.
I Made It Here
Find out about a true immigrant entrepreneur success story. With the help of NYCEDC and NYCIDA, the Kaldawy family, founders of Mondial Automotive, were able to stay in Queens, grow their business and make it here, in New York City.
“If it wasn’t for NYCEDC and NYCIDA we would have closed our facility”
In 1956 Showky Kaldawy Sr. came to the City from Lebanon with $21 in his pocket and a skill; the ability the repair and remanufacture automotive parts. He started his business and his son, Showky Jr. came onboard as President. The family business, Mondial Automotive, grew way beyond the size of its existing facilities. Showky was left with two options, close the business or try and find another location. The new facility would have to be near the existing buildings because the company did not want to lose any employees or jeopardize the goodwill and business relationships it had created over the previous 50 years.
Working with NYCIDA, Mondial Automotive was able to secure the financing to purchase and renovate a 30,000 sq. foot facility in College Point, Queens. The company is now able to offer its customers one-stop-shopping. Now, four years later, Mondial has more than doubled its revenue and according to Showky, the business may have closed without the help of NYCIDA. The Kaldawy family business is a true immigrant entrepreneur success story, starting and making it in New York City.
