Founded in 1990, Common Ground is a not-for-profit that has been working tirelessly to put an end to homelessness. In 1997, the organization was seeking land for their first housing project in the Bronx. The vision was to help revitalize and reach out to the community with a residential facility that included support, charitable, and community services.
To that end, Common Ground entered into a land sale agreement with NYCEDC for the space to develop the project. The building, located at 455 East 148th Street in the Bronx, opened its doors in January of 2010. It provides housing to low-income workers, the homeless, people with HIV/AIDS, and the mentally ill. The building boasts 190 residential units, ground floor community and retail spaces, plus a spacious outdoor garden. There is also a fitness center and a computer lab available to the residents. What Common Ground has done and continues to do is much-needed and appreciated by the underserviced, underprivileged, and oftentimes overlooked in the community.
