The City Point project is a major redevelopment initiative undertaken by NYCEDC as an outgrowth of the Downtown Brooklyn Plan. A center piece of the revitalization of Downtown Brooklyn, the City Point site will encompass 1.6 million square feet of development opportunity, including local and national retail and affordable and market rate housing. In order to gain input for the project from the local community, Albee Development LLC began meeting with elected officials and other community stakeholders. The primary objective of these meetings was to discuss the project plans and understand the community’s priorities for redevelopment. Access to quality jobs for area residents was at the top of everyone’s list.
NYCEDC piloted the innovative HireNYC program, which connects the City’s workforce development programs and local community-based organizations to permanent job opportunities created through NYCEDC’s real estate development projects. Albee Development LLC agreed to be one of the first private developers to utilize the HireNYC program to source candidates for the 200 jobs projected for the first two phases of the City Point project. Construction began on the first phase, including 50,000 square feet of retail space. HireNYC implemented a comprehensive recruitment and hiring strategy for the permanent jobs at the site.
