Urbantech NYC

Urbantech NYC coordinates and supports the entrepreneurs, researchers, and spaces that make New York City the global hub of urban technology innovation.

Overview

Urban technologies encompass technological innovations and solutions that directly address the challenges and constraints of urbanization–from mobility or building efficiency to food access or waste systems. Urbantech NYC is a comprehensive initiative designed to catalyze innovation and support entrepreneurs who are making cities more livable, sustainable, and resilient . Since 2015, this program has leveraged flexible and affordable workspace, prototyping resources, curated leadership networks, and innovative public-private-academic applied research models to promote entrepreneurial solutions to New York City’s urban challenges.

Resources

Urbantech NYC provides:

  • Over 100,000 square feet of affordable and flexible coworking and private office space for companies across all stages of the growth cycle

  • Demonstration opportunities on publicly owned assets

  • Citywide challenges and competitions that foster applied entrepreneurship

  • Co-located prototyping and testing equipment for rapid on-site product development

  • Formal cross-sector networks of top-tier stakeholders, including academic institutions, investors, corporate partners, high-profile startups, and City agencies

  • Tenant support services, such as business skills workshops, mentorship programs, and organized “demo days”

  • Targeted, sector-specific events that will strengthen the cleantech and smart city communities in New York City

Hub @ New Lab (Present)

  • Focus: Growth-stage hardware companies
  • Location: Building 128 (Brooklyn Navy Yard)
  • Size: 84,000 square feet
  • Features: Prototyping and testing lab for rapid product iteration
  • Partners: ARUP, Autodesk, Carnegie Mellon, and CUNY City Tech

Urban Future Lab (Former)

  • Focus: Early-stage cleantech and smart cities companies
  • Location: 15 Metrotech (Downtown Brooklyn)
  • Size: 10,000 square feet
  • Features: ACRE Incubator and PowerBridge Proof-of-Concept Center
  • Partners: NYU Tandon School of Engineering, NYSERDA
