NYCxDESIGN 2019 Holds Official Launch at 1stdibs Gallery

Annual citywide celebration of design runs May 10 through 22; 350+ events featuring designers from New York City and around the world

New York, New York – New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today previewed the start of NYCxDESIGN 2019, New York City’s annual celebration of design. The launch of the seventh edition of the program, held at 1stdibs Gallery, in conjunction with the Female Design Council’s opening of their “Deeper than Text” exhibition, previewed hundreds of events happening around the city from May 10 to 22. Hosted at venues throughout the five boroughs, the celebration of design unites culture, education, and entertainment with a wide array of programming, including exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, open studios, and more.

“NYCxDESIGN has become one of the most important global celebrations of New York City’s thriving design sector in just seven short years,” said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. “The program draws both local and international attendees to experience our rich design culture. With almost 400 events for 2019, we look to surpass last year’s attendance of nearly 340,000.”

“We are looking forward to sharing and experiencing the tremendous thinking and creativity that will envelop the city during this year’s NYCxDESIGN,” said Edward Hogikyan, Chief Marketing Officer at NYCEDC. “Both the global and local design leaders and innovators whose talent will be on display will amaze and inspire all those in attendance. We expect 2019 to be our biggest and best edition of NYCxDESIGN to date.”

NYCxDESIGN programming is informed by a steering committee composed of many leaders in New York City’s design community, representing a broad swath of design-related programs, events, organizations, and both academic and cultural institutions. The events showcase design across a wide range of disciplines including architecture, design education and thinking, digital and technology, craft, engineering, fashion, film, furniture, graphic design, manufacturing, interior design, landscape design, product design, theatre, urban design, and more.

In January 2019, NYCEDC announced the selection of SANDOW as the operator of NYCxDESIGN for the 2020 edition of the program and beyond. Following a successful seven-year period growing the festival from inception to its current scale, it was determined that the program would realize its full potential being managed by an external entity. Following review of the proposals submitted in response to a public Request for Expressions of Interest issued in Summer 2018, NYCEDC selected SANDOW, a global leader in design media and innovation.

"We're honored to host the kick-off event for NYCxDESIGN 2019 at our new Gallery," said Cristina Miller, Chief Commercial Officer of 1stdibs. "Design is at the heart of all we do at 1stdibs, and participating in the NYCxDESIGN program gives us a new platform to celebrate the incredibly talented and passionate members of this industry."

“Deeper than Text is an exhibition that focuses on exceptional and innovative works from all over the world that engages visitors to look beyond the surface to see the passion, the process and power these works hold,” said Lora Appleton, Founder, Female Design Council and Founder, kinder MODERN. “Having 1stdibs support the Female Design Council and sponsor this exhibition during NYCxDESIGN is an honor and provides an incredible platform to help me continue to shine light on amazing women in design.”

“Every borough of New York City is absolutely bursting with talent,” says Interior Design’s Editor in Chief Cindy Allen. “We launched the NYCxDESIGN Awards to celebrate the inspired work and dauntless designers who make our great city the astounding place it is. This year we saw over 800 product and project entries from across the city and the world – 33 countries and four boroughs are represented this year. These entries came from over 150 firms and 400 manufacturers, the very best of whom will be celebrated at the NYCxDESIGN Awards. All winners and honorees will be announced on May 20th – until then I encourage you all to get out there and see what extraordinary things our community has to offer during NYCxDESIGN!

For the 2019 edition of the program, NYCxDESIGN is pleased to have The Diner—a pop-up experience based on the American diner and presented by Surface Media, 2x4, and architect David Rockwell—as an official sponsor. In an effort to give visitors the best experience at The Diner, Surface Media and their partners have collectively decided to shift the unveiling of the installation from 2019. They are working on plans to debut The Diner in New York City in celebration of NYCxDESIGN in 2020, and look forward to showcasing all of The Diner’s unique offerings and innovative programming at that time.
