NYC Ferry Has Nearly 92% On-Time Performance; NYCEDC Launches 2018 Ferry Feasibility Study

Public reports detail on-time performance and ridership data from May 2017 to date

New York, NY – New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today released quarterly public reports that detail the NYC Ferry system’s daily and weekly ridership statistics and on-time performance (OTP), which at nearly 91.9%, is in line with other passenger ferry service OTP trends from around the country. In addition, NYCEDC kicked off the 2018 ferry feasibility study, which will analyze potential sites that can support ferry access.

“NYC Ferry’s success in just two years has been extraordinary,” said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. “We’re incredibly proud to have launched six routes and have served 6.5 million riders since the system launched in May 2017. We're slashing commuting times, connecting residents to major job centers, and reuniting New Yorkers with their waterfront and helping them discover other neighborhoods. We look forward to exploring ways to bring ferry service to more communities.”

The 2018 ferry feasibility study will examine sites for consideration as future landings or routes that could complement the existing NYC Ferry system. The first stage of the study will include briefings with elected officials and community board representatives. The second stage of the study will consider key factors such as water depths, population density, existing access to transit, and travel time comparisons between existing modes of mass transit. The public can also suggest additional sites for the study through an online form. Suggested locations must be received on or before Monday, October 15.

Release of quarterly public reports follows the launch of the Lower East Side route in August, the sixth and final route to start service as part of the initial roll out of NYC Ferry. The reports primarily focus on the system’s OTP and daily and weekly ridership by route and landing. The reports also include periodic highlights, service notifications and weather summaries. All reports dating back to May 1, 2017 are available here. The reports will be posted approximately 45 days after the end of each quarter.

NYC Ferry is comprised of six routes – Rockaway, East River, Astoria, South Brooklyn, Soundview and the Lower East Side – and has served nearly 6.5 million riders since launching in May 2017. NYC Ferry serves approximately 18,000 riders on an average weekday, and approximately 28,000 per weekend day.

Earlier this summer NYC Ferry welcomed the arrivals of Ocean Queen Rockstar and Seas the Day, the first two higher-capacity 350-passenger vessels ordered to accommodate high ridership demand. Four additional 350-passenger vessels are scheduled to arrive in time for peak season next year. Revised ridership analysis projects that NYC Ferry’s ridership could grow to as many as 9 million annual passengers by 2023, twice as many passengers as initially projected.

NYC Ferry has already employed over 325 people to fill positions such as captains, deckhands, customer service agents, ticketing, operations and more. New Yorkers of all backgrounds and skill levels are welcome to apply. Jobseekers can apply directly at ferry.nyc.
