Mayor Bloomberg Outlines How Tuesday's Giants Celebration Could Add $38 Million to City's Booming Tourism Industry


Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced that tomorrow’s ticker-tape parade in honor of the Super Bowl XLVI Champions New York Giants will have an economic impact of between $19 million and $38 million, depending on the number of spectators, which was estimated at between 500,000 and one million. The parade will be yet another boost for the City’s thriving tourism industry; a record number of tourists – 50.5 million – visited New York City in 2011. Visitors spent an estimated $32 billion, up from $31.5 billion in 2010. It is estimated that about one-third of ticker-tape parade attendees will be visiting from outside New York City. 49,483 people entered this morning’s sweepstakes for tickets to tomorrow’s ceremony at City Hall Plaza, at which the Mayor will present the Giants with Keys to the City.

“The Giants’ Super Bowl victory was an incredible win for our City – and now tomorrow’s ticker tape through the Canyon of Heroes will be another big win for New Yorkers and our small businesses,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

Tomorrow’s parade will begin at Battery Place and Washington Street at 11:00 AM and continue northbound up the Canyon of Heroes to Worth Street. The parade will be followed by a ceremony at City Hall Plaza, at which the Mayor will present the Giants with Keys to the City. Winners of the ceremony ticket lottery will be notified beginning at 2:00 PM and will have to pick up their tickets at a location in Midtown by 8:00 PM Monday night.

The costs of the parade will be offset by the official sponsors, including: Duane Reade, Hackensack University Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, MasterCard, MetLife, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Pepsi, PVH, Stop & Shop, Timex, Toyota, WFAN Radio and Walgreen’s.

The Giants victory also means that Mayor Bloomberg is collecting on the friendly wager he made with Mayor Menino prior to the game. Per the terms of the bet, a New Yorker will now win a Super Tour of Boston. New Yorkers can enter to win the trip via www.nyc.gov, by calling 311 or texting 311692 beginning on Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Entrants must be 18 years or older, must reside within one of the five boroughs of New York City and may only enter once. The winner will receive:

• Four roundtrip tickets on JetBlue
• A two-night stay at the Ritz Carlton
• Dinner for four at Legal Seafoods Harborside
• Dinner for four at the Top of the Hub restaurant
• Four tickets to a performance at the Citi Performing Arts Center
• Four box seats at a Bruins or Celtics game at the TD Garden
• A behind-the-scenes-tour of the newly expanded Isabella Stewart Gardner museum
• A Duck Tour ride
• A VIP tour of the personal diaries of John Adams, which inspired the HBO series, at the Boston Public Library, the first publically-support free city library in the world
• A VIP tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain
• A photo with Mayor Menino
