You’re Speaking My Language: Making Connections in Inwood

 |  NYCEDC

NYCEDC’s success hinges on connecting with the neighborhoods we serve. That’s why the Government and Community Relations team has made community engagement a priority. We want Inwood residents—and residents throughout the City—to understand the various resources made available through the City of New York.

So, in Inwood, where a majority of the community speaks Spanish, we needed to think of new, more inclusive ways to share information. With this in mind, we partnered with Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez to host a Spanish-language resource fair in Inwood in January, 2018.

The fair was a huge success, with more than 100 attendees. NYCEDC and other City agencies provided information on such topics as affordable housing, adult literacy and education, youth employment, after-school programs, health and wellness programs, job skills training, resources for small business, and legal services—all in Spanish. It was great to see community members engaging—in their own language—with the City of New York at this incredible event.

We were also happy to distribute our bilingual Inwood NYC Action Plan—Winter 2018 Update, which highlights the City’s progress in the six months since the original action plan was released. This includes advancing key goals of the community, including renovating vacant buildings to create nearly 100 affordable housing units. We also provided over 50 Inwood businesses with access to nearly $500,000 for capital renovations.

We even had delicious pastries and treats from a local vendor—just one way in which we contribute to the local economy and support local businesses. NYCEDC looks forward to continuing our Spanish-language outreach as the Inwood Planning Initiative goes through land use review process.
