Imagine Your #FutureNYC

What's Your #FutureNYC Vision?

That’s the question we posed to attendees at last Thursday’s launch of the sixth annual BigApps competition, NYC’s premier civic tech initiative and the largest civic innovation competition in the country.

BigApps challenges New Yorkers to build tools that help solve our city’s most pressing civic challenges.

This year's challenges are inspired by the Mayor’s strategic blueprint for the city, as outlined in this year’s One New York plan.

They include:

1. Affordable Housing
2. Zero Waste
3. Connected Cities
4. City Engagement

Our #FutureNYC Campaign

With an eye towards public engagement, we thought it made sense to take the conversation one step further by asking the people who live, work, and contribute to our city’s ecosystem to imagine their future NYC–beyond the four prescribed topics.

So, we brought out colorful markers and signs to provide BigApps attendees with a blank slate to concoct their #FutureNYC tech visions. The responses we received ranged from sketches of a connected city to app ideas to words depicting a sense of hope and innovation.

We believe the first step to a better city is an expressed vision. Over the course of the next few months, we will be at more NYCEDC events, asking attendees to share their thoughts on the future of specific industries. Our hope is that this will spark a digital dialogue on the endless possibilities in store for NYC’s future.

These events will be publicized on social media and here on the blog, but if you don’t catch us at an event, feel free to share your vision on social media using hashtag #FutureNYC.

Creative submissions like the ones below will get a shout-out on our social media accounts!
