2014 Coney Island Opening Day
by Alexandra Silversmith, Development Analyst at NYCEDC
On Sunday, thousands joined elected officials, community leaders, residents, and business owners to usher in the 2014 Coney Island amusement season.
The day kicked off with the 29th annual Blessing of the Rides at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park. This Palm Sunday opening partnership between the Salt and Sea Mission and the Vourderis family provides local Coney Island kids with the opportunity to enjoy the amusements in their very own backyard.
Following the Blessing of the Rides, a press conference was held at the Cyclone Rollercoaster, followed by the traditional christening of the Cyclone by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. The first 100 riders on both the Wonder Wheel and Cyclone rode for free.
Throughout the day, the boardwalk was packed with visitors and boardwalk businesses like Tom’s Coney Island, Lola Star, Ruby’s, and Brooklyn Beach Shop were crowded with customers. One of the newest additions to Coney Island, Rita’s Italian Ices, opened on Sunday and gave out free Italian ices to all visitors on its first two days.
These events kicked off another great season for Coney Island!
If you missed Sunday’s grand opening events, don’t worry. Luna Park and Deno’s are open every day this week for New York City’s public school spring break, and weekends until Memorial Day. There's fun for everyone. If rides aren’t your forte, take a stroll on the boardwalk, stop at some shops and restaurants, and take a trip to the New York Aquarium—they’re all open daily!
