Know of a young innovator who will change the world?

NYCEDC is proud to partner with CE Week NY to present the “10 Under 20: Young Innovators to Watch” award. This award will recognize ten students between the ages of 13 and 19 years old who have displayed exceptional potential by developing an innovative project with a civic use that can improve the lives of New Yorkers. NYCEDC recognizes that New York City has many budding innovators and entrepreneurs who deserve to be highlighted for their work. Through this award, these young students will be recognized citywide for their innovation and talent.

Applicants will be evaluated based on their demonstrated contribution to the general field of innovation. This can include applications in media, technology, fashion, bioengineering, digital arts, health, manufacturing, product design, industrial design, clean technology, and other industries or sectors. A team of expert judges will review submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Creativity and Innovation (25%): How creative and unique is the submission?
  • User Interface and Design (25%): Is the project easy to use, understandable, and clear in its mission?
  • STEAM (25%): How well does the project utilize and apply knowledge from the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics fields?
  • Civic Mindedness (15%): How will your application improve the quality of life for New Yorkers?
  • Scalability (10%): Does the project have what it takes to become the stepping stone for a commercial project?

Advancing STEM education in youth has become a prominent initiative in the administrations of both President Obama and Mayor De Blasio. Educators and economists acknowledge the need to ramp up training in these fields as these major technical disciplines drive the innovation of new technologies and engineer solutions to the world’s most pressing issues. STEM education is vital for America’s economy and the next generation’s workforce who must use technology to design solutions that address the complex challenges of a growing population with finite resources. Technical STEM positions across all industries are becoming necessary, and the 10 Under 20 award aims to celebrate New York City’s young minds who have already begun innovating while on their path towards higher education, career success, and personal fulfillment.

The deadline to submit an application is May 29th, 2015 at 11:59 pm. Eligibility requirements, application materials, and more information about the award can be found on the 10 Under 20 Awards program page. This is a great opportunity for students to submit an existing project for the chance to receive recognition by the NYC tech community and enhance their professional portfolio when applying to colleges and jobs.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this opportunity through your newsletters, social media (#10Under20NYC), bulletin boards, and other marketing channels that can reach young innovators.

Additional questions about the award can be sent to [email protected]. Winners will be notified by mid-June and will be invited to attend a reception at CE Week NY on June 24th at the Metropolitan Pavilion where they will be presented with their awards.
