Manhattan Beer

"We're thrilled to stay here in New York City. With a name like Manhattan, it would have been a shame to move to New Jersey."

Simon Bergson, President and CEO, Manhattan Beer

Business Need

Simon Bergson thought he fulfilled his dreams of becoming a small business owner when he opened a small beverage center operation in Lower Manhattan in the 1970s. He formed Manhattan Beer in 1998 and in the first year, the company achieved sales of approximately 100,000 cases. By 2008, Manhattan Beer had grown sales by 300 percent with five locations, 300 delivery trucks, and 900 employees, but Bergson needed to expand and was considering an alternative site outside the five boroughs.

Solution

NYCIDA was able to provide discretionary incentives to ensure that the business stayed in New York City. Manhattan Beer was able to grow, creating a new $25 million distribution hub in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. This expansion helped Bergson’s company continue to grow and prosper. Plus it will create at least 55 new unionized jobs at the site in the first three years alone.
