Mayor Bloomberg's PlaNYC 2030 calls for the creation of public plazas in every community in the City. In promoting this goal, Fordham Plaza, located in the heart of the Bronx and adjacent to the busy Fordham Road retail corridor, has the potential to become one of the City's signature public spaces.
The Plaza serves as a major transportation hub, where the Metro-North station and over 12 bus lines converge. NYCEDC, in partnership with NYCDOT, worked closely with the local community and stakeholders to develop a shared vision for a revitalized Fordham Plaza. NYCEDC hired WXY architecture urban design to create the conceptual design plan.
The project team conducted many interviews, focus groups and public charrette sessions, gathering information about how the local community wanted the Plaza to evolve. The conceptual design reflects this feedback and charts a powerful vision for the future of Fordham Plaza.

After the completion of the Conceptual Design, the project will move first into the preliminary design phase, followed by the final design phase. The NYC Department of Design and Construction will implement the design and construction on behalf of NYCDOT. The project will likely be divided into phases because of funding availability. The first phase of construction is estimated to begin in early 2012, assuming no unforeseen complications. The second phase will begin shortly after the first, assuming the full funding need has been reached.
