CREATE @ Harlem Green

Last Updated February 28, 2012 at 2:06 pm

The CREATE @ Harlem Green development will revitalize and physically transform an underutilized space by creating a state-of-the-art commercial building, while preserving the most of the façades of the original buildings.

Overview

Located on West 125th Street, this historic property was the former home of the Taystee Cake Bakery, which closed in the late 1970s. In the decades since its closing, the building has been vacant and suffered decay.  In an effort to revitalize the neighborhood and preserve the building, NYCEDC issued an RFEI for the redevelopment of the Taystee Bakery in November of 2010. Janus Partners LLC and Monadnock Construction, Inc. were selected to lead the redevelopment project.

Project Details

Janus Partners LCC and Monadnock Construction Inc. will redevelop the Taystee Bakery complex into CREATE @ Harlem Green, a large commercial/industrial space which will house businesses from creative industries. The development will preserve the building's original façade and add approximately 328,000 square feet of new commercial space. The space will be divided among manufacturing space, office space, retail space, and community facility space.

Several local businesses are expected to expand or relocate to CREATE @ Harlem Green:

  • Harlem Brewing Company will move its production facility from Saratoga Springs.  It will also grow hops on the building's roof, provide tours, and open a brewing museum, tap room, and gift shop.
  • Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center will lease 53,000 square feet of manufacturing space to small manufacturing and artisan companies in small spaces of 1,000 to 5,000 square feet.
  • HerFlan, which currently is at the La Marqueta kitchen incubator, will establish a wholesale production facility and retail outlet at CREATE.
  • Carver Federal Savings Bank, the largest African-American operated bank in the U.S., will have a banking presence and support project financing.
