LatAm to NYC, the inaugural Latin American-focused program of NYCEDC's World to NYC initiative, promotes trade and investment between New York City and Latin America by hosting business delegations of Latin American-based companies and helping them expand to New York City.
The first World to NYC delegation visited New York City over the period of December 6-10, 2010. The delegation included 20 vetted companies looking to establish a base in the United States within 6-12 months after visiting NYC.
The most recent delegation visited New York City February 6-8, 2012, with nearly half of the 50 delegates representing Latin American internet-based firms. This strong interest from Latin American tech companies justified our initiative to launch the first Latin American-focused World to NYC program.
During all the program iterations, NYCEDC hosted a full schedule of events specifically designed to facilitate the expansion of participant companies. Multiple sessions directly introduced delegates to New York City business leaders, including high-level leaders from the media and technology, fashion, and financial services industries. Prominent entrepreneurs were featured in moderated conversations on the growth and successes of their present ventures.
Delegates participated in tours of local business incubators and co-working spaces, presentations on the VC community in NYC, and pitch workshops. Legal and accounting information was presented by professional service providers, and international entrepreneurs who had already expanded to New York City discussed their learnings. Other program events in both iterations included business receptions, networking and social events, and targeted meetings based on the needs of each delegate.
The program was designed for CEOs and senior executives of companies looking to establish a presence in New York City within 6-12 months of the visit. For the August program, the media and technology sectors were the primary focus.
