Nicole Robinson-Etienne Joins Coney Island Development Corporation as Outreach Coordinator
Coney Island Development Corporation (CIDC) announced that Nicole Robinson-Etienne has joined the Corporation as Outreach Coordinator. In her new position, Robinson-Etienne will be responsible for managing the extensive community outreach activities connected to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Coney Island and the comprehensive rezoning plan introduced last month. The goal of the strategic plan and the rezoning package is to safeguard and build on Coney Island’s unique amusement legacy to create a year-round entertainment district with a strengthened residential community. Robinson-Etienne will be based at NYC Economic Development Corporation’s offices in Lower Manhattan.

Kelly. “With Nicole’s help, we’ll continue to work toward engaging the support of all stakeholders for our efforts to make Coney Island once more a world-class destination. Robinson-Etienne, a native of Brooklyn, spent the past seven years as special counsel to Assistant Speaker of the NYS Assembly Rhoda Jacobs. Her duties included advising on legal issues, problem solving related to delivery of social services and public benefits, and developing and maintaining ongoing relationships with community groups, schools, hospitals, media and corporations. Prior to that, she was a contract attorney working for a number of prominent New York City law firms. Robinson-Etienne is a graduate of Fordham University and Northeastern University School of Law where she was awarded the Denise Carty-Bennia Community Service Award.
“As a life-long Brooklyn resident, Coney Island has a special place in my heart and I am excited to be part of the team overseeing its redevelopment. I look forward to partnering with residents and all community stakeholders to ensure that the Coney Island revitalization plan is a success,” said Robinson-Etienne. As part of the Strategic Plan for Coney Island, CIDC and the City are working with the community on a major rezoning effort that aims to strengthen the amusement core while creating new jobs and residential opportunities throughout the community. Most recently, the design team of EDAW/Rockwell was selected to provide landscape, architectural and consulting design services for Steeplechase Plaza, a new civic and amusement destination in the heart of Coney Island.
A Public Scoping Meeting on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the plan is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Lincoln High School in Coney Island. Last year, the City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development and Economic Development Corporation designated Coney Island Commons LLC to develop a mixed-use complex with more than 100 residential units, more than 75 percent of which will be affordable to low- and middle-income families, and a state-of-the-art community center to be operated by the YMCA. CIDC has also engaged The Doe Fund to provide supplemental sanitation and clean up services in and around the amusement zone.
The Coney Island Development Corporation was formed in September 2003 by the Mayor, the City Council and the Brooklyn Borough President. The 13-member Board of the CIDC includes City officials, local and Brooklyn-wide business and community leaders. It is charged with spearheading and implementing a comprehensive planning process for Coney Island and creating a coordinated economic development strategy for the area.
