The Essex Street Market was built as part of Mayor La Guardia’s effort to remove push-cart vendors from city sidewalks in the 1930s. It now consists of four buildings on three blocks along Essex Street, near Delancey Street. Building D is not used as a market. Today, the single story brick and concrete building encompasses more than 15,000 square feet. The clerestory windows and skylights 20 feet above the floor offer ample natural lighting, but additional lighting would have to be provided by the lessee.
Building D has power but no lighting, heating, or water. A loading dock and four other points of entry offer excellent accessibility.
Parties interested in using NYCEDC properties will need to meet certain time limit, insurance, and other requirements. Learn more about the requirements and process to acquire a permit.
