How We Work

Capital Program contributes to NYCEDC’s broader mandate by providing the physical infrastructure, facilities, and amenities that strengthen the City’s competitive position and facilitates investments that build capacity within the City.

Capital Program Staff provide direct design and construction management services to an extensive portfolio of over 100 active municipal projects throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Project types include piers and terminals, buildings, markets, sports and cultural facilities, infrastructure, waterfront esplanades, streetscape and pedestrian improvements, special projects, and funding agreements.

Capital Program also provides support services to NYCEDC departments and various City agencies which require specialized expertise or construction.

Project Designation

Many projects come to NYCEDC from City agencies such as the Department of City Planning, Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Parks and Recreation or from Borough Presidents, other local elected officials and Local Development Corporations. These agencies often elect to have NYCEDC manage design and construction projects, valuing our experience in maneuvering projects through complex City regulations. In part, this stems from the close relationship that NYCEDC has with these agencies and from our participation on special projects in coordination with these agencies and in coordination with Mayoral initiatives.

Project Execution

Once NYCEDC and partner agencies determine individual project requirements; NYCEDC assembles a skilled design team and construction manager with the specific expertise and experience to complete the project. NYCEDC’s capital division manages approximately two hundred design and construction projects within a broad range of categories.
