We’re so pleased that NYC Venture Fellow Eric Beckman, founder and CEO of GKIDS, an animated art-house and family movie distribution company, had two of GKIDS' films nominated for Best Animated Feature for the 2012 Academy Awards!

But the big surprise came from New York-based distrib GKids, which landed nods for two pics: "A Cat in Paris" and the jazzy "Chico & Rita."

The nods for "Cat," from Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli, and "Chico," by Fernando Trueba ("Belle Epoque"), comes as GKids is expanding the number of pics it releases, having recently inked a deal to handle North American distribution of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli's library, which includes "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke."

GKIDS engineered a successful campaign in 2010 to snag an upset Academy Award nomination for "The Secret of Kells" in the Best Animated Feature category—the only independent picture nominated along with major release films from Disney, Pixar, Universal, and Fox. Eric is also founder and director of the New York International Children’s Film Festival, North America’s largest film festival for children and teens.
