OVERVIEW

NYCEDC has capabilities to provide a full-scale technical service division whose mission it is to channel the City’s capital budget investments into design and construction projects that support economic development.

Project Types
We manage capital projects, both large and small, to ensure they come in on time, on budget, and are of quality design and construction.

Project Designation
Many projects come to NYCEDC from City agencies such as the Department of City Planning, Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Protection and Department of Parks and Recreation or from Borough Presidents, other local elected officials and Local Development Corporations.

These agencies often elect to have NYCEDC manage design and construction projects, valuing our experience in maneuvering projects through complex City regulations.  In part, this stems from the close relationship that NYCEDC has with these agencies and from our participation on special projects in coordination with these agencies and in coordination with Mayoral initiatives.

Project Execution
Once NYCEDC and partner agencies determine individual project requirements, NYCEDC assembles a skilled design team and construction manager with the specific expertise and experience to complete the project.  NYCEDC’s capital division manages approximately two hundred design and construction projects within a broad range of categories.

Project Highlights
For information about the types of capital projects NYCEDC works on, continue reading below.  For each project category, you will find an overview and a link to a detailed Project Profile.

PIERS & TERMINALS

By revitalizing the City’s Piers and terminals, NYCEDC helps to provide enhanced water transportation and revitalized recreational options including waterfront park space and small boat landings. These waterfront projects catalyze economic growth, make the City more livable and promote tourism.

NYCEDC has been responsible for implementing many waterfront projects that support a wide range of functions - from ferry landings to recreational piers. In cooperation with the Department of Transportation, NYCEDC managed the construction of the new Staten Island ferry terminals for DOT, the Whitehall Ferry Terminal and St. George Ferry Terminal. In addition, NYCEDC has been responsible for the construction of the new cruise terminal in Brooklyn and the reconstruction of existing cruise terminals in Manhattan.

SPORTS FACILITIES

Within the last five years, NYCEDC has been a builder of many notable sports facilities. NYCEDC constructed stadiums for the minor league teams of the Mets, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, and the Yankees, in St. George, Staten Island. We have built new facilities on Randall’s Island, and a new swimming pool and ice rink are under construction in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Sports projects typically increase local pedestrian traffic, attract tourists and act as a stimulus for other development.

BUILDINGS

One of NYCEDC’s goals is to create better uses for City properties. As such, we have been involved in the construction and/or restoration of many buildings throughout the five boroughs. Many of our building projects involve an element of historic restoration, as with the Tweed Courthouse. It was restored and is now home to the NYC Board of Education.

The Battery Maritime Building, another historic landmark, has recently won an award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy for its historic restoration. NYCEDC completed exterior restoration and is seeking a developer who will envision new uses for the building. This will add a new public space to the downtown Manhattan neighborhood and create a new destination for residents and tourists alike.

STREETSCAPE & PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS

NYCEDC works on many capital projects that help beautify New York City by enhancing neighborhood streetscape aesthetics. These improvement initiatives often require the input of community organizations and Local Development Corporations or Business Improvement Districts. The projects are tailored to specific neighborhoods and often include creative paving and plantings, lighting, benches, and signage.

These pedestrian amenities make neighborhoods more livable for residents and more attractive to tourists and businesses. Streetscape and pedestrian improvement projects in various stages of design and construction are underway in all five boroughs including Flushing, Queens, Hunts Point, Bronx, and Downtown Brooklyn.

CULTURAL FACILITIES

NYCEDC participates in many capital projects that contribute to the rich cultural landscape of the City. The Audobon Malcolm X Center and the Police Museum are two cultural organizations housed in historic buildings that NYCEDC has restored. Through funding agreements from various sources, we have also been involved in many other cultural projects including the American Museum of the Moving Image, Martha Graham Dance, and the Lincoln Center Master Plan.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Because infrastructure is an essential component of a properly functioning city and NYCEDC implements capital projects to strengthen out transportation, telecommunications and energy capabilities. Some of these projects come to NYCEDC through the requests from City agencies who cannot take them on themselves. One notable project improved the City’s drainage systems to alleviate chronic flooding conditions. NYCEDC has also carried out improvements to the railway servicing Staten Island and another servicing the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center in the Bronx.
