OVERVIEW

With help from NYCEDC, we were able to move our operations under one roof. The savings on the real estate tax and the energy costs allowed us to be very efficient and now we're better able to contend with foreign competitors.

New York City is home to more than 10,000 manufacturers and industrial firms. These firms employ nearly 500,000 people – approximately 15% of New York City’s workforce. Our industrial and manufacturing firms run the range from architectural products to bagel makers and custom furniture builders.

Supporting NYC
For the most part, manufacturing and industrial businesses support New York City’s more signature trademarks such as the arts, museums, shopping and restaurants as the city’s signature trademarks. For example, the precious artwork displayed at our museums are packed and shipped by handlers located in the Port Morris section of the Bronx and the Williamsburg-Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The merchandise display cases at Tiffany’s and Saks’ Fifth Avenue were manufactured in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Broadway’s many theatrical sets and lighting ensembles are designed and built in Long Island City, Queens. And the fresh meat and produce that make up that five-star meal are trucked in from the Hunts Point section of the Bronx.

Manufacturing is Big Business
The manufacturing and industrial sectors contribute more than $1.7 billion annually to the local economy and new companies continue to enter the market.

Slightly more than a third of the industrial companies in New York City have been in business five years or less, a third have been in business six to 20 years and about 25 percent have been in business for more than 20 years.

WHY NYC?
A recent survey of approximately 500 industrial and manufacturing firms in New York City showed that the City’s unparalleled concentration of residents, businesses, economic activity and wealth creates a tremendous end market for the goods and services produced by the industrial sector.

Employers often praise the City's highly-skilled labor pool and depth of talent as key to their success in operating a business in New York City.

Moreover, as the international business capital, the City offers many industrial businesses the unique opportunity to thrive as part of value-chains in sectors such as media, publishing and fashion.
INDUSTRIAL BUSINESS ZONES (IBZS)
IBZs are geographic areas that reflect active industrial land uses within New York City. The IBZs offer three primary advantages.

The first is the Bloomberg Adminstration’s promise not to rezone any area within the IBZs for residential use. Secondly, a one-time tax credit is available to those industrial and manufacturing firms that relocate to an IBZ.

And finally, the City provides comprehensive business assistance services to industrial firms in partnership with local economic development groups. Sixteen IBZs have recently been established throughout the City.

In many instances, Empire Zone benefits are available to businesses within the IBZs. Empire Zone benefits range from sales tax exemptions and credit for real property taxes to wage tax credits and utility rate savings.

View the City’s IBZ Maps for more information.
