New York City is the hub of an emerging center for commercial bioscience. The New York City Bioscience Initiative website explains more about the development of a network of state-of-the-art facilities accommodating commercial bioscience businesses and related research activities throughout the region.

The NYC bioscience community includes:
- $1.3 billion of annual NIH funding
- 6,800 bioscience-related patents, more than any other US metro area
- Headquarters of four major pharmaceutical companies
- Over 125 bioscience companies
- Streamlined clinical trials process – the Biomedical Research Alliance of New York (BRANY) provides central Institutional Review Board (IRB) services for clinical trials, with one IRB serving 170 institutions. This allows trials to initiate within six weeks of application.

Since 2000, the NYC Metro Region has consistently ranked among the top four for venture capital dollars invested in bioscience and medical device companies, with $750 million raised by New York’s public companies in 2004.

New York City has the most developed medical infrastructure in the United States, with 72 hospitals including the Hospital for Special Surgery, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

- Home to 5 of the top 50 medical schools in research
- Home to over 50% of all oncology clinical trials

The NYC Metro Region has the second largest concentration of Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators. Local institutions have produced more National Medal of Science recipients than any metro area in the country.
Other talent highlights include:
- New York has more bioscience employees than any other metropolitan area in the US, according to a study by Battelle.
- NYC institutions produce more graduate students in the life sciences than any other city
- The NY metropolitan area alone produces more bioscience and engineering graduates than most states with approximately 535 biomedical engineering graduates per year
- The largest scientific and healthcare workforce in the country accounts for more than 375,000 jobs including 29,423 physicians

NYC represents the largest bioscience cluster in US by patents issued. More bioscience patents were issued to individuals and institutions in the NYC metro area than in the San Francisco and Boston metro areas from 1990 to 1999.

Other commercial activity highlights include:
- NYC’s academic institutions produce an average of 30 start-up companies per year
- Major publicly-traded biopharma companies include Bristol Myers Squibb, ImClone Systems, Pfizer, Regeneron and Forest Laboratories

East River Science Park (ERSP) Construction on the City’s first major bioscience office park is underway and will provide laboratory and office space for bioscience companies, beginning in late 2009. ERSP is a state-of-the-art research and development campus that will be the flagship location for future bioscience expansion in New York City. |  |

The Audubon Biomedical Science and Technology Park The Park at Columbia University houses start-up and established biomedical research firms.
Advanced Biotechnology Park This State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center offers wet or dry lab and office space to start-ups and early-stage biotech companies.
