Whether you consider shopping a leisurely activity or a competitive sport, New York City offers an unmatched variety of retail options to satisfy any consumer. From discount stores and street vendors to major chains and high-end boutiques, shopping here is exceptional and presents options for every budget.
OVERVIEW
Shopping on a Grand Scale
New York City is a shopping mecca. Each year, Fashion Week alone attracts 200,000 visitors, adding $230 million to the City’s revenue. From big name designers like Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren to those just on the brink of fame, the City offers a variety of fashions to suit any taste or style.

From Luxury Items to Bargain Bins
Stroll down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan for retail titans like Tiffany & Co., Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel and Saks. Herald Square is home to famed Macy’s, the world’s largest store, with 1 million square feet of goods. Also in the neighborhood are sample sales allowing wallet-watchers to shop guilt-free for deals on designer wares. And just in case you need an added incentive to spend, all clothing and shoe purchases under $110 are now tax-free.

Specialty Shopping Districts
Shoppers with specific items in mind can head straight to one of the City’s many specialty districts. Find diamonds and jewelry in the Diamond District on West 47th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, or for those with a green thumb, there’s the Chelsea Flower District. Canal Street is known for its bargain knock-offs and you can find designer goods and art in Soho.

Fantastic Food Shopping
From cooking staples to more exotic ingredients, you can easily find what you need at one of 4,790 grocery stores are conveniently located throughout the City. They include popular favorites such as Whole Foods, Zabar’s, Dean & DeLuca, and Trader Joe’s. The City also has many small gourmet stores that sell everything from meat, seafood, cheese, baked goods and chocolates, to coffees, teas, herbs and spices.

Public & Green Markets
Throughout the year, New Yorkers can find fresh ingredients to cook wholesome meals with regionally grown produce, farm-raised meats and fish, and other goods found at the City’s public and green markets. The revitalized Essex Street Market—67 years old and better than ever—continues to provide shoppers with a variety of specialty foods and services, as well as personalized attention. Stroll the aisles to find everything from fresh Chilean sea bass and top-quality Porterhouse steaks to gourmet cheeses, handmade pastas, and even tropical fruits and vegetables.

For nearly 32 years, Greenmarket has operated 28 seasonal farmer’s markets throughout the five boroughs. Shoppers can also find year-round markets such as Manhattan’s Union Square Market and the markets at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall and Grand Army Plaza.
