Staten Island Railroad Reactivation – Full Aerial View

NYCEDC coordinated the Staten Island Railroad Reactivation (SIRR) which completed in the Spring of 2006.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
  • Borough: Staten Island
  • Completed Spring 2006
  • $80 million total cost
  • Expansion of rail lines within Arlington Yard
  • 6500 feet of new track along Travis Branch
At a total cost of $80 million, the project included the expansion of rail lines within Arlington Yard, replacement of three timber railroad bridges, a new WYE connection for Travis Branch and SIRR Main Line and 6,500 feet of new track along Travis Branch.

The improvements were part of the City’s plan for rail transportation of containerized solid waste from the proposed department of Sanitation transfer station now being built at the site of the former Fresh Kills Landfill.
