Meeting on a monthly basis between late 2003 and 2004, the Sherman Creek Planning Committee brought together community stakeholders, local non-profit groups, elected officials, and government agency staff to discuss a framework for new development and waterfront access in the area.
To maximize public input, the committee organized a community planning workshop in January 2004. The workshop's discussions and recommendations prioritized the following aspects, setting important guidelines for NYCEDC and City agency involvement in Sherman Creek:
Residential and Commercial Development Focus on developing a rezoning plan that creates new affordable housing opportunities and strengthens the area's main commercial corridors with small-scale retail.
Traffic and Pedestrian Circulation Focus on improving key intersections to enhance traffic and pedestrian safety.
Waterfront Access and Recreation Focus on creating new parks and enhancing access to the Harlem River waterfront.
Since December 2004, NYCEDC has been coordinating and supporting several City-led implementation efforts. Visit the Department of City Planning and Department of Parks & Recreation websites for more information on key initiatives.
