$600 Million for New York Stem Cell Research
Governor Eliot Spitzer created a Stem Cell Research Initiative in his 2007-08 budget in an effort to increase New York's biomedical research capabilities and to make New York State a leader in stem cell research support. The initiative, in addition to creating the Empire State Stem Cell Board, includes $600 million in grants for stem cell research, which has included awards this year totaling $14.5 million, with $9.6 million going to 15 NYC institutions. |

Biotech R&D Funding Conference in NYC
Industrial and Technology Assistance Corporation (ITAC), in conjunction with NYCEDC, will host a Biotech R&D Funding Conference at Columbia University's Lerner Hall on March 18. The event will highlight R&D funding opportunities, including SBIR/STTR and QETC, as well as feature expert speakers, panels and one-on-one meetings with NIH Federal program managers. Columbia University Science and Technology Ventures and Fish & Richardson, P.C. are sponsors for this event.

Neuro-Hitech Announces $5 Million Private Offering
Neuro-Hitech, Inc., a New York City based biopharmaceutical company, has raised $5 million in a private offering. Money raised will go toward the completion of a Phase II clinical trial of Huperzine A for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and toward preparation for Phase III. |

NeoStem Acquires Stem Cell Technologies
New York City based NeoStem, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on adult stem cell therapeutics, announced it has acquired Stem Cell Technologies, Inc. Stem Cell Technologies owns a worldwide exclusive license to a technology that identifies and isolates rare stem cells from adult human bone marrow, called VSELs (very small embryonic-like) stem cells. |

Grants Available For Biotech Companies to Exhibit at BIO 2008
New York bioscience firms interested in exhibiting in the New York Pavilion at BIO 2008 for free are encouraged to enter the Innovation Competition. New York Loves Bio, in partnership with the New York Senate and NYSTAR, will award two scholarships for qualified expenses up to $10,000, making it possible for two life science firms to exhibit in the New York State Pavilion at BIO 2008. |
