NYC's Academic Institutions & NYCEDC Partner at BIO 2009 |
The 2009 BIO International Convention, which brought together 15,000 industry leaders, provided visibility to NYC’s bioscience industry and NYC’s Academic Medical Institutions. The New York Academic Consortium (NYAC), in partnership with NYCEDC, discussed collaborative research and licensing opportunities available at academic medical institutions in NYC. NYAC offices work together to develop and share the best practices that have made NYC one of the leading sources of pharmaceutical and biotechnology products and innovation.

NYC Recognized as North American City of the Future |
fDi Magazine, a publication of the Financial Times Group, has recognized NYC as the top North American City of the Future at the 2009 Bio International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. NYC was selected out of 400 cities from across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

New York Named in the Top 5 Biotech Regions in 2009 |
FierceBiotech has recognized the NYC metro area’s commitment to commercial biotech by naming the area as one of the Top 5 Biotech Regions in 2009. The publication praised the City’s commitment to the biotech sector through its development of commercial lab space for small and mid-sized companies at East River Science Park and the Brooklyn Army Terminal and showcased the momentum of the bioscience cluster in NYC.

New research led by investigators at NYC-based Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has identified three genes that act as genetic mediators in the spread of breast cancer to the brain. The study recently published in Nature, also illuminates the mechanisms by which this spread occurs.

NYC to Host Second Annual World Science Festival |
The World Science Festival, held June 10 – 14, will feature signature events with participation from co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, Harold Varmus, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, actor Alan Alda, musician Bobby McFerrin, and Charlie Rose. NYCEDC is a government partner for the event.

City Council Vote Leads to Empire Zone Benefits at ERSP |
On Wednesday, June 10th, the New York City Council approved an initiative to extend the Chinatown/Lower East Side Empire Zone to include the East River Science Park (ERSP). An Empire Zone will allow company applicants to access New York State tax benefits and further support the growth of New York City's biotechnology industry. The initiative was created in partnership with the Chinatown/Lower East Side Empire Zone.

Angioblast Systems |
Angioblast Systems, Inc. is a private biotech company committed to the development of novel biological treatments for cardiac and vascular disorders. Their proprietary adult stem cell technology platform enables development of allogeneic or "off-the-shelf" products which can treat tens of thousands of patients from a single universal donor. Angioblast's lead products target chronic heart failure, heart attacks, macular degeneration/diabetic retinopathy, and bone marrow transplantation, and the company is in the midst of Phase II clinical trials.
Recently, Angioblast announced interim results from their Phase II chronic heart failure trial which showed significant improvement in heart muscle function in patients receiving their proprietary allogeneic adult stem cells.
