Medical Breakthrough Ranked Number One by Time Magazine |
|
A milestone experiment performed by researchers at Harvard and NYC's Columbia University is the first to demonstrate that disease specific stem cells may be derived from an individual patient. The breakthrough, supported by NYC-based Project ALS and New York Stem Cell Foundation, opens the possibility of modeling a patient's specific disease outside of the patient, to improve investigation and drug screening, and to potentially develop new neurons to replace the damaged ones in the patient. |

Obama Selects Harold Varmus as Science Advisor |
|
Harold E. Varmus, a Nobel Prize winner for his research on the genetic basis of cancer, was recently named co-chairman for the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology by President-elect Barack Obama. Varmus formerly served as Director of the National Health Institute under the Clinton Administration and currently serves as President of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. |

Antigenics Seeking Approval for First Cancer Vaccine |
|
Antigenics, a biotech company working to develop treatments for cancers and infectious diseases, requested marketing approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for Oncophage for the treatment of earlier-stage, localized renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer). If approved, Oncophage will be the first therapeutic cancer vaccine to receive a marketing license from the European agency. |
