Record-Breaking Expansion for NYC's Healthcare System

The New York Sun recently reported on the expansion of New York City's healthcare industry. The article highlights a $242 million Heart Center at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center's $650 million Biomedical Research Building, and a proposal by St. Vincent's Hospital to construct an $800 million “green” hospital. Also mentioned is the $700 million East River Science Park.

Antigenics to Raise $26 Million in Private Placement

Antigenics Inc., a New York City based biotechnology company working to develop treatments for cancers and infectious diseases, announced that it will receive $26.1 million in a private placement. Antigenics also recently announced positive data resulting from a Phase I vaccine study.

Lev Pharmaceuticals Announces $20 Million Funding

New York City based Lev Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing therapeutic products for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, received $20 million to finance additional plasma purchases. This financing is in addition to its recent $35 million offering and a $21 million private placement raised in 2006.

IAVI Receives $900,000 for AIDS Vaccine Research

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), a global not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the development of HIV vaccines for use throughout the world, announced that BD, a global medical technology company, will provide the non-profit organization with $900,000 in cash, equipment and medical supplies over the next three years. BD's support will provide critical technologies for IAVI's laboratories in the U.S., Europe, India and Africa.

NYCEDC to Host Biotech R&D Funding Conference

NYCEDC, in conjunction with Industrial and Technology Assistance Corporation (ITAC), will host a Biotech R&D Funding Conference at Columbia University's Lerner Hall in Manhattan on March 18. The event will highlight R&D funding opportunities for bioscience companies, including NIH SBIR and QETC. In addition to expert speakers and panels, this event will feature one-on-one meetings with NIH Federal program managers.
