NYC-based Enzo Biochem has acquired Assay Designs, which sells assay kits to detect and quantify small molecules and proteins. Enzo, with annual revenues of $100M, is a leading life sciences and biotechnology company focused on harnessing genetic processes to develop research tools, diagnostics and therapeutics.

NIH Announces $200M Funding Program
|
|
NIH has designated at least $200M for a new initiative called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research. This new program will fund 200 or more grants to support research projects which address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research. Small bioscience businesses are eligible to apply for grants under this program. Act fast!! The due date is April 27, 2009.

Pfizer Cancer Drug Success

A Phase 3 Clinical trial of Pfizer cancer drug Sutent was halted early after the drug showed significant benefits in patients with advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, a rare cancer with limited treatment options. NYC-based Pfizer is the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical company.

Rockefeller's Natural Approach For HIV Vaccine

|
Scientists at NYC-based Rockefeller University have identified a wide range of natural antibodies in “slow-progressing” HIV patients that fights the virus. Their research suggests that an effective vaccine could be developed by using a team of natural antibodies that target several parts of the HIV virus.

Investor Opportunities at NYBA Conference

A Company Showcase has been added to the New York Biotechnology Association’s 18th Annual Meeting to introduce regional bioscience companies to the investor community. Presenting companies will be exposed to VCs, investment banks, and business development professionals. The Showcase currently has 16 companies participating including NYC-based Intra-Cellular Therapies, Thrombogenics, Enzo, NexGenix, and Cynvec. Also at the Meeting, NYCEDC will host an SBIR panel featuring Kay Etzler, NIH SBIR/STTR Program Analyst.
