While JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport make Queens an important part of urban New York City, many areas in the borough have the suburban feel of smaller towns. With a large immigrant population, Queens is the most ethnically diverse 115 square miles in the country and offers a resulting mix of cultures and traditions. Traveling through Queens can give you a sneak peak into the richness each group brings.
NEIGHBORHOODS
Because of the borough’s ethnic diversity, many neighborhoods in Queens offer international favorites like authentic shish kabob in Astoria’s largely Greek neighborhood, the time-honored Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing and traditional Irish music in Rockaway Beach. An emerging business district in Long Island City is attracting both residents and businesses seeking a convenient alternative to Manhattan real estate prices.
DESTINATIONS
Any visit to Queens should be include a stop at the Museum of the Moving Image where you can learn about the history and technology of film and television in America. The nearby Noguchi Museum showcases an impressive collection of masterful sculptures and designs of Isamu Noguchi. Sporting fans may be interested in the USTA National Tennis Center, home to the U.S. Open tennis championships, and the New York Mets’ Citi Field, both in Flushing.
